Negative Core Beliefs
Written by Ashley Grob, LCSW
Core beliefs are the foundation to how we see ourselves, others and the world. Our core beliefs mold our thoughts, which impact our feelings and ultimately lead us to making decisions. So what do negative core beliefs look like, and what type of impact can they have?
Negative Core Belief Examples:
“I am bad.”
“The world is a scary place.”
“I cannot do this.”
“No one understands me.”
“I am unworthy of good things.”
Negative core beliefs can have a great impact on one's mental and emotional health. Not only on a personal level but also within our relationships. These negative statements are not just thoughts, they are beliefs. When we believe something to be true beyond a doubt we will lead with that information, i.e. make our decisions based on these “facts”. When our beliefs about ourselves are negative this can lead to depression, anxiety, difficulty trusting, low self-worth/esteem, increase in substance abuse, tendencies to deal with stress aggressively etc.
However, core beliefs can be challenged and ultimately changed to be positive. This can be difficult at first but with time and practice, these shifts can occur. Therapy is a tool that can be used to change negative core beliefs. Therapy will also help a person navigate the feelings and emotions tied to these beliefs. Contact one of our therapists at Feeling and Healing to begin challenging these negative beliefs and ultimately erasing these negative core beliefs.
